Robert was born in the Wichita Hospital on Monday, November 3, 1924 to Stephen Curless and Ivel M. (Long) Curless. He graduated from Derby High School in 1942. His mother told of how he would go around “fixing” things with his tools when he was only four years old. He was a lifelong farmer. He loved the earth, growing wheat and raising beef cattle. His farm is just south of Haysville on 79th Street South. Robert’s farm is a Kansas Farm Bureau Century Farm, having been owned and operated for over 100 years by the same family. His kindness and generosity are legendary to those who had the pleasure to know or meet him. In addition to farming, Bob worked for Haysville School district for 61 consecutive years as a bus driver, maintenance man, and custodian, giving them by far the most longevity of any employee in the district’s history. In May 2021, the school district named the newly constructed transportation facility the “Bob Curless USD 261 Transportation Center”. Robert married the love of his life, Ruth Eileen Carr, a Haysville Third grade teacher, on December 27, 1950. They shared 68 years of marriage before she passed away July 24, 2019. Preceded by wife, Ruth; parents, Stephen and Ivel (Long) Curless; sisters, Hazel Fenster and Corene Love. Survivors: daughter, Anne (Greg) Lassey of Peck; son, Rick (Betsy) Curless of Haysville; sister, Florence Ann Loger of Clearwater; brother, Ernie Love of Wichita; grandchildren, Vance (Erin) Lassey of Holton, Wendy (Micah) Newell of Edmond, OK, CR Curless of Wichita, Angie (Travis) Salmon of Kansas City, Charity (Sven) Ohlund of Prairie Village; great-grandchildren, Luke Lassey, Ida Newell, Rebekah Lassey, Isaac Newell, Violet Newell, Maddux Ohlund, Tyler Salmon, Nash Ohlund, and Sophia Salmon; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Grandpa Bob’s love, kindness, generosity, and a toothpick bearing grin, will be deeply missed. Memorial: Meals on Wheels or API, (Memo line: Curless Memorial), 160 E. Karla, Haysville, KS 67060.
