Speer, Fred

Friday, 31 May 2013 21:15

Speer Fred Oval

Frederick Thomas Speer was born February 28, 1925, and died May 30, 2013. He will be remembered for helping his neighbors, loving his family, and faithfully serving his community and church.

Fred was born on the family’s Century Farm near Viola, KS, to Roy and Marion (Jacques) Speer. His son, Lynden, has carried on the family tradition and currently farms this land. Except for military service, Fred lived his entire life in the Clearwater area. He attended Good River, a one-room country school, and graduated from Clearwater High School in 1943. During World War II, Fred entered the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he piloted A-26 fighter planes and later helped with Japanese reconstruction. After the war, Fred farmed in the Clearwater area until his death.

Fred married Connie Whittle on June 5, 1949, in Sedgwick, KS. The couple enjoyed nearly 64 years of marriage and had five children: Nancy (Clint) Moyer, Susan (deceased), Lynden (Elizabeth), Carole (Craig) Chandler, and Jill (Carl) Gerriets. The family continued to grow with the addition of nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister (Anna) and brother (Robert).

Fred was a lifelong member of the “old country church” that merged to become the Clearwater Methodist and later the Clearwater United Methodist Church. He served there faithfully in many capacities. Fred also served on the boards of the Clearwater schools and Co-op as well as holding memberships in the Kansas Farm Bureau and American Legion.

Visitation will be at the Webb-Shinkle Mortuary on Monday, June 3, from 9 a.m.-8 p.m., with family present 6:00-7:30 p.m. Services with military honors will be held at the Clearwater United Methodist Church on Tuesday, June 4, at 10:30 a.m. The family requests memorials to the Clearwater Ambulance Service or Clearwater United Methodist Church.
