Pankratz, Lucille A

Pankratz Lucille oval

Lucille Ann “Lu Ann” (Jarmer) Pankratz was born at Kingman Hospital on January 19, 1943.  She was the middle daughter of Joseph and Bertha Jarmer.  The family lived in Zenda where she shared many household chores with her older sister, Virginia and younger sister, Josephine.  At the age of seven, Lu Ann was stricken with polio and taken to St. Francis Hospital in Wichita for treatment.  While she did recover, polio would affect Lu Ann for the rest of her life.

She graduated from Zenda elementary school and high school and then attended two colleges – Creighton University and Sacred Heart College (now known as Newman University).  While attending school in Wichita, she worked in a drug store where she met her future husband Gaylon Pankratz.  He accepted a job offer to start a new radio station in Larned, KS.  This small town became home for the rest of their lives.

Gaylon and Lu Ann were married on June 13, 1964 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Larned.  Lu Ann was a loving wife and mother.  She raised two wonderful sons, Michael and David, who filled her life with many proud moments.  She was a busy homemaker always preparing home-cooked meals, baking wonderful breads and desserts, gardening and canning, and sewing clothes.  Her professional career included being a Paralegal for more than 30 years; a Bookkeeper for the public library for over 20 years; and an Administrative Assistant at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital for several years.  Also, she was a member of Sacred Heart Choir, Sacred Heart Altar Society, St. Leo Daughters of Isabella, National and Kansas Post-Polio Society, and a Paralegal Association.

Throughout her life, she was an avid reader and a creative writer.  Gaylon and Lu Ann traveled to many different states, Canada and England.  In 1980, they purchased 5 acres in the Colorado mountains and the family spent many summers building a cabin which would become their vacation spot for several decades.

Lu Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Gaylon and parents, Joseph and Bertha Jarmer. Survivors include sons, Michael (Christine) Pankratz of Goddard and David (Kellie) Pankratz of Cheney; grandchildren, Nicholas, Daniel, Thomas, Noel and Lily Pankratz all of Cheney; sisters, Virginia (Jack) Steele of Wichita and Josephine Zane of Tucson, AZ; four nieces, three nephews, and many cousins.

Jesse was born at home, east of Conway Springs, KS on November 20, 1929. He was the third of six children born to Robert T. and Ova (Benge) Hare. Jesse attended Country School as a boy. He lived most of his life in Sumner County. Jesse married Bessie McCroskie in 1948. They had five children, but the marriage later ended in divorce. He met Dorothy Pauline Smith and they married in 1958. Jesse became a widower after 25 years of marriage. He met and married Ruth Hullinger from Wellington in 1986. They were married 27 years when Ruth passed away. As a young man, he worked as a farm hand and in the oil fields. Later, he worked in the packing house industry, retiring after 39 years. Farming was always a part of his life. He farmed ground, raised cattle, hogs, and sheep. He had a love for fishing, hunting, and telling stories about coon hunting as a young man. A great weekend for Jesse was a good game of family football. It always included his favorite play, the quarter back sneak (otherwise known as the “Jesse hare Cheat.”) He also enjoyed hide-and-seek card games, dominoes, and singing. He loved to be around kids, teasing and joking around. In his later years, the highlight of his day was a visit from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jesse missed his true calling of being a weather man. He loved watching the weather and making sure everyone knew what the weather was going to be for the day, Jesse enjoyed everyone he met.
