Hedrick, Steven D.

Hedrick Steve Steven D. Hedrick, age 65, of Wichita, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2015.

Visitation, 9am-8pm, Mon, with family present 6-8pm, Webb-Shinkle Mortuary, Clearwater. Services, 10:30am, Tues, Milton United Methodist Church.

Memorial: Milton United Methodist Church, 1378 N. Argonia Rd, Milton, KS 67106.

Steven Dee Hedrick was born on January 12, 1950 in Wichita, Kansas and departed this life May 28, 2015, in Wichita, Kansas.

Steve resided in the Anness-Milton area from birth to early adulthood.  He attended Cheney Public Schools. At 15, Steve contracted encephalitis and spent months in the hospital with life threatening health issues.  According to health professionals, his survival was unlikely.  Steve’s resolve and the faith and love of his family reversed the disease and left the medical community amazed.  The after effects of the illness, however, continued to present challenges for Steve throughout his life.  After his recovery, Steve obtained his GED and completed a program in automotive paint and body repair.  He enjoyed a season working on a shrimp boat in Houston and resided in Cuchara, Colorado where he worked in construction.  He always had a soft spot in his heart for Cuchara and longed to return.

Steve lived in Wichita and spent the remainder of his life living there until health issues forced a move to Cornerstone Ridge Plaza Assisted Living in January and then later to the Cheney Nursing Home.  An extended family for Steve was his AA group and he treasured friendships made over the 27 years he attended.  He was always one of the first to assist those in need with transportation or some type of assistance.

He was a member of the Milton United Methodist Church and had a real spirit for giving and especially to those who could not reciprocate. Steve’s hobbies were watching movies and art.  He had a fascination with eagles and they were often the subject of his artwork.

His parents, Oral Junior Hedrick and Charlotte Hedrick, and special friend, Lena Parker, preceded him in death.  He is survived by two brothers and their wives, Rodney and Lois Hedrick, of Milton, Michael and Deanna Hedrick, of Cheney, one sister and her husband, Sherri and Bill Hall, of Colorado Springs, 8 nieces & nephews: Angela Black, Curtis Hedrick, Stewart Hedrick, Barton Hedrick, Holly Duft, Derek Hall, Garret Hall and Kendall Hall, and 12 great nieces and nephews: Ashly, Allison, Rodney, Reed, Griffin, Harper, Christian, Chesney, Koyie, Ashton, Gauge and Leighton and a number of other relatives and many friends.
